BASE CAMP

Base Camp was created over a year while living in Philadelphia culminating with a site specific installation along the Schuylkill River during Art in the Open in 2011.

In 2010 I visited the American Civil War Museum in Richmond, Virginia and was inspired by the handmade flags, bedding, and embroidered ammunition satchels that the women made to support the men in war. This had me questioning how gender politics guide us into specific careers and intrests.

Being a girl I was not allowed to join the Boy Scouts and instead had to settle for selling cookies rather than go camping and learn how to start fires. I decided that I wanted to create my own "army" or rather the objects that one may need in an army.

Over the next year I made the flags, bedding, tent, cart, trophies, and ammunition. During the 3 days of Art in the Open I would set up my tent, and embroider a map of the neighborhood along the Schuylkill where Base Camp was stationed.
